Long-Lasting Ice Makers
This is probably the question we hear most: Which ice maker lasts the longest? Unfortunately, it’s in the nature of ice makers to break more quickly than other appliances.
The best way to keep your ice maker running is to clean it regularly, ideally once a month, and give it a deep clean with vinegar at least twice a year. Using distilled or filtered water also helps since hard tap water can leave mineral deposits that clog lines, damage sensors, or build up on the evaporator where the ice forms. About 85% of the U.S. has some level of hard water, so check how it is in your area.
However, water choice also affects how your ice tastes and feels. For machine lifespan, distilled water is best, filtered is second, and tap water is worst. For taste, we think tap water tastes best, filtered is second, and distilled is last, so it’s a tradeoff.
We use tap water for our own ice makers because it’s convenient and tastes best to us, and we’re lucky to live in an area with fairly soft water.
